The emphasis in this course is on language skills. Students are encouraged to use relevant vocabulary, correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and to demonstrate a sense of style and an awareness of audience in their use of language.
Through reading, students will learn to understand and collate meanings, summarise, paraphrase, and understand how writers achieve effects.
Through writing students will learn to articulate their own experience; express thought, feelings and imagined ideas clearly; order and present facts, ideas and opinions; understand and use vocabulary and register appropriate to audience and context; use grammatical structures, paragraphs, sentences, punctuation and spelling accurately and effectively.
Through Listening students will learn what good listening skills consist of, why they are important and how you can improve them. The course helps you determine what type of listener you are, provides basic skills of listening, barriers to listening, listening habits, distractions, and activities to improve listening habits. You will learn the importance of listening attributes, active listening, attitude, perception, bias, language barriers, key gestures, and even how to take good notes.
English IGCSE Subject Content
Each lesson of the English International GCSE course begins with a set of clearly stated aims and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study. Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment questions, and there is guidance for the preparation of the Anthology to be used in the exam.
Who is this course for and what’s it about?
The IGCSE English Language course doesn't presuppose you have any prior knowledge about English, apart from the having reading and writing skills of an average person. However it will show you everything you need to know in order pass the exam in about 8 - 18 sessions (based on the average time taken by most students). Unlike some courses which can be quite dry in tone, this course reflects the joy in learning, which I feel should be part and parcel of any English study and should (I hope!) enhance a lifelong love of reading and even writing.
The course consists of 3 sections, and they cover all the reading and writing tasks you will need for the exam, such as comprehension, composition and creative writing; as well as, listening..
I give plenty of practical guidance, together with short exercises to test your learning. I'll also tell you all about exam technique. There is a mock exam included in the course and the option of doing extra past papers practice. As with all my courses there is unlimited (within reason!) phone and email support.
