Course Description
Students will enrich their English vocabulary, while working towards reading a range of short stories, extracts from novels, drama, poetry and non-fiction. Teaching strategies will include class discussion, groups, pair and individual work. The students will gain writing and speaking skills to help them communicate more effectively.
Your textbook is closely aligned to the Cambridge Checkpoint English Coursework. Each unit, each selection, and each workshop in your textbook connects to one or more of the standards for English Cambridge Checkpoint.
Course Objectives
• The student will participate in and contribute to conversations, group discussions, and presentations.
• The student will identify and demonstrate the relationship between a speaker’s verbal and nonverbal messages.
• The student will express and determine the meanings and pronunciations of unfamiliar words and phrases within authentic texts.
• The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction, and poetry.
Course Requirements
- Students will be responsible for daily warm-up exercises, lessons, in-class notes, and classwork.
- Students will complete regular homework assignments by the due date.
- Students will be assessed on a regular basis with quizzes and tests.
- Students must keep notes, class work, homework, handouts, assignments, and all tests and quizzes neatly stored and organized in their classroom binder.
- Students must come prepared to each class with required material (textbook, notebook or loose paper, specific handouts, pencil, pen, etc.). Other necessary supplies might be requested as needed.
Academic Honesty:
Cheating in any form is unacceptable. It will inevitably result in a failing grade. Plagiarism can never be accepted; not only will it lead to a zero grade, but it will also render the offender liable to the issue of a formal disciplinary notice that could find its way to the student’s permanent file.
